To survive we must adapt...

Our survival as a species as well as many other species depends on us doing things differently and not relying on the broken models of waste and consumption that has driven America to the point of collapse. We need to start structuring our lives on those third world countries who will continue to exist when America is just a footnote in the history books.

Here is a response I got today about my various experiments in waste reclamation. I think that the post completely captures what is wrong with America today.

What is wrong with you? Are you not aware of the fact that A. septic systems exist? B. They are required? C. In most places, you can do it yourself? and D. After getting the perk test done, and permit for the septic system, and the system installed, you're problems are over?

I'm sure your neighbors really appreciate your kindness to the their wells in that area also. Being a "survivalist" means putting some thought behind each situation for the long-term. I'm talking about intelligent thought processes. True "survivalists think about the environment. Chump, you are in America, not some 3rd world country so all I'm saying is if you are going to put forth the effort to become a survivalist, you should put forth the effort to do it properly!
Actually I am thinking about the environment and survival in a finite system. All a septic system does is traps nutrient dense waste underground where it can never be used again if you compost this waste it can be recycled back into crop production this is especially helpful in arid areas such as mine. Nitrogen is a main component of fertilizer and of urine. Our waste should be recycled back into nature not locked away in an underground vault.

Plus if you have a septic system you will be using 3 to 5 gallons of water with each flush just to get rid of waste which is completely unacceptable. I am currently existing on about 2 gallons of water every day. There are deep wells out on the valley floor going dry as I write this. Once we have exhausted our finite supply of well water it's over folks. It will take millions of years to replenish the aquifers and frankly we will be gone by then.

Septic systems and your attitude towards them is what is wrong with America today. The reason septic systems are required is because not so long ago some plumbing contractor decided he could make a ton of money by convincing the state legislature to mandate septic systems at $3000 a pop. The state loved the idea because they get $500 for each inspection.

Composting toilets and urine recycling systems are the way of the future. Think about the tons of nutrient dense crap and nitrogen that are flushed out of a business skyscraper every day not to mention the billions of gallons of water wasted. The future will see this waste collected, composted and sold as fertilizer or topsoil to grow crops. Not to mention the fact that the composting process produces tremendous amounts of heat which could help offset heating cost in the winter reducing dependence on natural gas. Or we could go so far as to collect the methane from the composting process and use it to cool and heat our building. This American waste cannot continue.

Being a survivalist does not mean we take our sanitized/monetized lifestyle of city living and replicate in a small cabin. The old ways of consumption and waste have failed us and to survive we must adapt.

I get where your coming from. Every time I try to discuss composting methods of waste disposal. There is always a FECAPHOBE. Here in Pa,Ya gotta have sewers or septic or you will have problems. The Official kind. But the State highway department can build composting comfort stations and "be green'. When selling water filters I clinch the sale by letting folks know that the water they are drinking now had someones ass washed in it this morning. There are still alot of folks who just have to poop in water or they can't well Poop. grin

Currently helping a friend with a house rebuild. The old septic system barely works so he's going with a composting toilet. However, on the building permit, the plans show the house connected to the septic. Hey, as long as it looks good on paper and keeps the inspectors away . . .

His neighbors would freak if they knew.

You nailed it BigBear. Sheeple don't understand other ways of doing things unless it's been permitted, installed by a licensed-bonded-approved "professional", inspected, and signed off by some damned engineer. They've been "institutionalized"...

The permitting process is another reason we didn't build on raw land. We have a shallow well and an "outdated" septic. Next year we plan to jet another well a few feet deeper and use the current one for watering the garden. The septic we'll replace with a graywater design when it "fails." Meanwhile, down the road a bit we have homeowners building mound septics (which must be pumped out) yet their million $ homes are being built on wetlands that were filled in so the wildlife that once inhabited the area has left and the rich folks are complaining about the deer and coyotes in their yards!

Hey BigBear, do you compost your dogs poop? I have three big dogs and their poop comprises half of my weekly garbage. I'd like to do something worthwhile with their poop and reduce my garbage costs so I've been thinking of composting their crap. My backyard is too small for a crap compost and I haven't figured out how to cleanly transport that nuclear waste to my tree farm. Maybe I should get a freezer.

You said, ..."I think that the post completely captures what is wrong with America today." What you failed to say was, "What you're doing is completely illegal and you don't care!" I had no other choice left other then to report you to 3 different agencies for your lack of concern so we'll see how you handle the troubles heading up the pike. You better hope you dotted all the "i's" and crossed all the "t's" now. The moral of the story is when you do cross the lines, do not let it be known to readers after they express concerns to you. I may not know exactly where you live, but I am willing to bet the State of Colorado does by now!

Anonymous worm... You are full of crap. Furthermore, you are a brainwashed little puke, completely ignorant of the way things work. You didn't report squat, so STFU you weasel. I'm sick and tired of infantile little blowhards like yourself, so go crawl back under your rock, suck your thumb, watch Tellietubbies, and leave those of us who are smart enough to duck out from under the totalitarian beast system alone.....

Sorry, back to you BigBear.....

Actually composting toilets are not illegal down here. If I had a well then I would have to have a septic.

Yes you still represent everything that is wrong with America. God help your neighbors and God help America with citizens like you.

BigBear said...

But I would still not put in a septic for the reason listed in the article.

Following the rules will never produce security or solve any of the problems facing our country today.

Anonymous the "rules" were put in place to control you and further corporate profits. The "rules" will never help you only control you. If you want to live under this control fine...I will not.

Mockum I rake up the dog crap every couple of weeks and throw it into the composter. The only organic thing I don't compost is coffee grounds. They go directly into the planters.

Try 5 gallon buckets for transporting the crap. I guess it depends on how often you travel out to the orchard. Don't freeze it though that is a waste of energy.

I'll have to put my reading glasses on and double check, but I think 'Anonymous' was being sarcastic, playing the role of a busy-body statist.
p.s. I am posting anonymously but I'm not 'anonymous' who posted above.

Bud, I was being sarcastic. You were supposed to take it that way as if I was someone special with say, the EPA or who ever. For example, survivalism depends on being able to survive through harsh conditions, such as over-regulating and the like so I must congratulate you in these words so it's clearly understood.

Wow a whole lot of stink about feces how appropriate. The military has been disposing of waste in the field using urine tubes and burn barrel latrines forever. your composting toilet set up is far more green than using diesel oil and stiring poop till it burns to ash. I spent many days in beirut on sh-t detail. Most of us are envious that you are actualy unplugging and living the life. God bless Leo from Mississippi

Interesting topic. I dunno where all the guff is coming from- we who have septic tanks get them pumped every few years or so... and guess where the stuff is dumped.
Yup- on the ground, usually some farmers hay field.
Up here, outdoor biffy's are still legal; unsightly mound septics the 'in' thing with the county now for most places; and compost toilets are hte rage in many seasonal homes where the septic is used irregularly and 'dies' in the off season.
Go figure.
Of course, the Algoreys of the world are biting their nails in fear.

Urine is a great source of nitrogen for plants. Cut it with some H2O and use it when watering

This man Big Bear is attempting to get you people involved in an illeagal conspiracy. Big Bear does not live in Colorado or anywhere in a shack in the country. He is a government agent living in a large city back east. He is trying to get you folks to do the illeagal things he says he is doing like not paying off debts, building dwellings without proper permits etc. This is so he can enable his government and corporate handlers to gain control over your assets and lives.

Big Bear, Question for you:
I've heard that composting biffy's is fine as long as you're not a carnivore. (Meat goes rancid and can contaminate the soil with all manner of nasty microbes from inside the gut and outside as well.)
The dog poop seems to fall into the category of carnivore. Wondering if you have a system for further breaking it down before using it on the garden?

C.H.

Minimum of two years of hot composting will kill off the bad stuff.

Just so you know I will not be using any of the human or dog compost on the garden I will be planting some Aspens next year and will use the compost for those trees.

Down the road maybe on the garden but not for a few years.
