Mossberg 500 Tactical

I didn't need it, I just wanted it...and is that so wrong?

With the recent weirdness down at the land I decided to get a home defense weapon with a little more lead in it's ass than my .22 pistol and rifle. Last Thursday I picked up a 12 gauge Mossberg 500 Tactical shotgun. The great thing about this gun is the ease of use and maneuverability. Oh, plus it kills real good.

In my opinion a 12 gauge shotgun is the best defensive weapon around. At 2 a.m. I do not have the mental agility to effectively bring a rifle or handgun to bare on a target. Just can't do it. So I needed an early morning weapon that is forgiving on accuracy and intimidating as hell. You just point the shotgun in the general direction of what needs killed and pull the trigger. Plus with the six round capacity if you miss with the first shot you try again.

The short barrel and retractable stock on the Mossberg 500 Tactical shotgun allows me to maneuver around in the dark house without getting hung up on my crap. A long shotgun is cheaper and kills just as well but I consider it dangerous in small living quarters. I don't know which would be scarier. An intruder breaking in and rushing me or me trying to bring a long barreled shotgun to bare on him with out sufficient coffee.

At any rate I figure that most intruders would be confronted before they entered the house. If the security lights and barking dogs don't persuade them to leave then nothing says move along better than the sound of a shell being chambered.

Excellent choice. I've got one just like. Loaded with 00 buckshot up front, and slugs bringing up the rear. I figure if it can't kill what needs killin', I'm in a bigger mess than I can handle alone.

BigBear, I'm glad to hear that you are taking measures to protect yourself from whatever strangeness is going on out there. It sounds pretty creepy to me. I hope they find your neighbors soon. From his blog, one of the guys (the one waiting for his camera) had a run in with some neighbors on his property a few days before he disappeared. I wonder if they might have something to do with his disappearance.

Keep safe

nah... forget 00 buck and get some #4 buck with slugs and 00 in the sidesaddle. More pellets, not alot of overpenetration with the #4. Especially in CQB without coffee.:P

westyoungman,

I don't think so. I know the neighbors and they are not like that. The post does show that "Bob" might have some anger issues though.

Hope you are doing well and getting along with your move.

12 gauge pump shotgun. Good move. Let 'em come get you now! OO Buck will handle anything up to a bear. Bears require slugs. And shotguns are not "point and shoot and probably hit it" type of weapons. You gotta aim the damn things. There should be a little bead sight up on the front end of your barrel. Familiarize yourself with this contraption.

A 12 guage shotgun is the best home defense weapon system ever devised. You did good, Bear.

I agree with soilman, practice is the key. Get to know your weapon. 12 ga is a good choice.

Got a Mossberg 500 myself, not a tactical model though. Great shotgun. Click. Clack.

Best shotgun for the money sold today.

A bit of bright paint (neon or luminescent) on the front bead might aid in target acquisition (i.e. bad eyes or under low light).

Epecially in self-defence situations it is best to aim a shotgun as you would a rifle.
Please do fire at large paper targets at ranges out to thirty yards. You will see what size groups your shotgun shoots with different kinds of ammo.
My Rem 1100 20" puts OO buck in a ten inch group at forty feet.
Make the first shot count. The moment of truth may last only thirty seconds.

I agree with several on this: Start with a wider pattern up front and work down to 00, and a slug or two at the rear. The conflict should end with one side of the story...yours. I would practice as well. You want to be accurate and have an automatic reaction that comes from practice. Most conflicts are in under 20'

I procurred a 500 Tactical at a gun show recently. Just got around the firing it yesterday. Wasn't sure how accurate I could be with such a short barrel, but I was consistently hitting clays at 50' with dove loads. Anyone know of an after-market stock pad for the tactical stock? I had the thing snugged up tight, but my bicep and shoulder look like I took a Nolan Ryan fastball.

check these out.

i put a pepper round first in my mossberg which is followed immediately by the rubber buckshot if the pepper round being chambered and that doesnt get the bugger outa my home then a custom load of 4 00 buckshot and a shitton of #4 will make sure they dont

i've always felt most comfortable with a shotgun shell sequence of: first shell a slug(the reasoning behind this is in case there is a friendly near your target you don't take them out too); second shell 00 buck; third shell #4 shot, and each shell after those alternating 00 buck and #4 shot.incidentally, i was a shotgunner in 'nam(ithaca model 37) so i do have a bit of credentials behind my opinion.... thanx
