Bean and Rice - The Survival Diet

I wanted to see how well I could hold up just eating the survival supplies that I put back. This month it will consist of Pinto Beans, Rice and bread. My diet is so unhealthy right now that moving drastically to something different might be difficult. In other words I am addicted to a high fat diet.

So one of the main issues to explore is how well I can adapt to the new diet. Will my energy level be higher, will I get tired of the staples, what is the best method for preparing the foods, how do I spice it up.

Right now I will be making the beans and rice in a crock pot. I think this will best emulate the dutch oven sitting on top of the wood stove. The beans go in to cook around six in the evening the following morning they are washed and stored in a pot. Then the rice is dumped in the slow cooker for about three hours. At lunch I mix them all up and have a meal the rest is saved for dinner. I cook one cup of dried beans and one cup of rice each day. I pop a multivitamin in the mornings with a couple of slices of toast before leaving for work.

This is a minimal diet but billions of people in the world live on it. I will let you know how well it works out.

Bigbear,
Good luck on the new diet.
You might want to try a thermal cooker. Works like a crock pot without using electric. Here are some reviews on them. There are cheaper versions on Ebay.

Hmmmm... I hope that it's brown rice, which has a lot more nutrients than white rice. Good luck with the experiment!

Hermit,

I have both put back, but right now it is white rice. I will switch over to brown in a couple of weeks.

Big Bear -
So, HOW DID IT WORK OUT? If you caved, say so, if you learned something, say so. Doing it half-
a--ed is use less. Finish what you start. I've ben going thru your stuff all morning and this totally blows you credibilty.

So what was the outcome of your experiment? Do you give up? What did your learn? I have read your second attempt, but what happened in this first try? I have been reveiwing your stuff all morning
and failure to follow up on this blows you credibility.

I have been living on it for a couple of years now. Once your system gets used to lower fat and higher fiber it's all good. You don't necessarily lose weight though.

Brown rice contains 10% less slow carbohydrates vs basmati rice. The only advantage brown rice has is its zink contents - around four times as much as regular rice.
